Audio Merchants : Hi Fi Tips

Bi wiring

The simplest hook-up between an amplifier and a pair of speakers uses a two-core cable per speaker - one conductor is designated positive, and marked with a '+' symbol and/or red plugs and terminals. The signal goes into a crossover in the speaker: an electrical circuit that splits it between the drive units.

So when using a bi-wire cable the bass and midrange signals go to the woofer, while signals above a certain frequency go to the smaller tweeter. This is a more direct and purer path which results in a clearer sound.

Audio merchants stock a wide range of high quality speaker cable.

Bi amping

Using two separate amplifiers, one for the bass frequencys, another for treble, has been used by the professional audio industry for many years. Audiophiles and videophiles look at bi-amping (or tri-amping) as a way to improve performance, the pro audio industry sees multi-amping as a basic requirement.

By adding an additional power amp this improves depth, dynamics and bass control of any system regardless of cost.

We offer a wide range of power amplifiers and can demonstrate the benefits of this in-store.

Subwoofers

Since deep bass 80 Hz and below is non-directional, the subwoofer can go just about anywhere on the floor, but corners will give you the greatest enhancement of deep bass. You will have to experiment to achieve smooth and extended deep bass in your preferred listening location. Bass output will vary in different spots in the room as a function of the room's dimensions, so aim for good bass extension in preferred seating locations. Audio Merchants offer a wide range of Subs.

Cables

One of the most commonly asked questions is, "what percentage of the cost of my system should I spend on cables?". The standard reply has always been "Around 10% of the total cost". Over the past few years, the improvements made to audio and home cinema components have increased the requirements for high quality cables. The answer: Experiment. This is where we will be able to help you with the best choice for your system and budget.

DVI or HDMI Connections

Many of today's TV and satellite set top boxes feature DVI or HDMI outputs. HDMI is a fully digital multi-channel audio and HD video carrier. For video, connect DVI or HDMI as you would component connections - they're both meant to carry digital HDTV signals. We'll soon start to see more TV/satellite boxes with HDMI input/outputs and connecting your home theater system with HDMI will be easier than ever. When it's fully implemented, the HDMI output on your TV/satellite box will go into your home theater receiver and out again into your TV - one cable run for everything!

Audio merchants stock a wide range of DVI and HDMI cables.

Speaker placement

Whether you're planning a budget home theater system, or working with high-end A/V gear, paying attention to the location and positioning of your speakers usually pays off with a big improvement in sonic performance. Keep in mind that there are too many variables involved for there to be a single "magic spot" that's always best. Every speaker has different sonic characteristics, every room has different acoustic properties, and everyone's ears hear sound a little differently.

Ideally, your front speakers, high-frequency drivers, or tweeters should be positioned at ear level (when you're seated) The shape of your room and how it's furnished will affect the sound you hear. For instance, too many bare surfaces can cause reflections that may add harshness to the sound. Adding carpeting and drapes can help. Audio Merchants can advise on all aspects of speakers positioning and placement.

Isolation

Cones and spikes improve the performance of most Hi-Fi and home cinema components by both holding more rigidly and improving their isolation from mechanical feedback. When supported the delicate laser scanner inside the DVD or CD player can more accurately read the disc's surface. This creates less work for the player's error correction system, resulting in more natural and accurate reproduction.
